Troubleshooting Mail Delivery
These are the most common reasons for mail sent to umich.edu not being accepted/delivered:- Sending host blocked due to bad behavior. Hosts blocked in this manner will be issued a permanent failure (5xx) and will be unable to deliver mail until Postmaster removes the block. For details see E-Mail Blocking at U-M.
- Third-party Realtime Block Lists. Our users have the ability to block mail from known spam sources (identified by RBLs). For more details, see Using the Do Not Spam List to Reduce Spam.
- High server load. During periods of high load connection attempts may result in a temporary failure (4xx). As long as your server queues and re-delivers the mail should be accepted on a subsequent delivery attempt.
- Anti-spam, anti-phishing and anti-virus filters. A number of filters are in place to combat malware and scams. If you are unable to deliver mail to umich.edu, or are experiencing repeated delays, you should inspect the contents of the undelivered mail. If you believe the mail is legitimate you can contact Postmaster for assistance.
